Beautiful and pristine lakes of Sikkim



Sikkim has many lakes though they are not very large in size. These lakes are either spring fed or river fed. Perhaps the most famous one is the Tsomgo Lake. Another well known is the Khecheopalri lake.  Menmecho lake, Green lake and Samiti lake are also beautiful lakes.
Tsomgo means the "source of the lake" in Bhutia language. This lake lies on the highway to Nathu La, 34 Kms from Gangtok. This serene lake is situated at an altitude of 11,000 ft. It is a restricted area, therefore an inner line permit is required by Indian nationals to visit this place whereas, foreigners are not permitted to visit this lake without special permission. This oval lake is about 1 km. Long and 15 meters deep. The lake is sacred to the local people and a small temple of lord Siva is situated on the lakeside. One can also see red panda and brahminy ducks here. It remains frozen during the winter, up to mid-May.
